I’ve lost count of how many business owners have said to me, “I’m doing everything right—social media, email newsletters, Google Ads—but nothing’s working.”

And every time, I ask the same question: “Who are you trying to reach, and what do they actually care about?”

The silence that follows tells me everything I need to know.

Here’s the hard truth I’ve learned over 25 years: digital marketing doesn’t fail because the tools are broken. It fails because we use those tools to talk at people instead of to them.

The “More” Trap

When marketing isn’t working, the instinct is always to do more. More posts. More ads. More emails. More platforms. It feels productive. It feels like you’re making an effort.

But more of the same thing that isn’t working is just… more noise.

I’ve watched businesses pour thousands of dollars into Facebook ads targeting “everyone aged 25-55 in Pakistan” and then wonder why their cost per acquisition is through the roof. I’ve seen email lists of 10,000 people with a 2% open rate. I’ve reviewed social media accounts with daily posts that get zero engagement.

The problem isn’t effort. The problem is relevance.

What Actually Works (In My Experience)

Focus on one audience. Not a demographic—a person. What keeps them up at night? What questions do they type into Google at 2 AM? What have they already tried that didn’t work? Build your entire strategy around answering those questions.

Create content that solves a specific problem. “5 Tips for Better Social Media” is noise. “How to Fix the ‘Facebook Pixel Not Firing’ Error in WooCommerce (Step-by-Step)” is signal. One attracts scrollers. The other attracts buyers.

Measure what matters. Impressions and follower counts feel good. But if those followers aren’t becoming customers, you’re just collecting vanity metrics. Track conversions, cost per lead, and customer lifetime value—the numbers that actually impact your business.

A Real-World Example

One of our clients—a small logistics company—was spending heavily on Google Ads with terrible results. We sat down, looked at their actual customer data, and realized something surprising: their best customers weren’t searching for “logistics services.” They were searching for specific solutions like “how to ship fragile items internationally” and “customs clearance for electronics.”

We rebuilt their entire ad strategy around those specific queries. Within three months, their cost per lead dropped by 60%. Same budget. Different focus.

That’s the power of relevance over volume.
