I started doing SEO when “keyword density” was the hot topic and meta tags were the wild west. Twenty-five years later, I can confidently say: AI search is the biggest shift I’ve seen since Google first introduced PageRank.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth: if your SEO strategy is still built around ranking for a list of keywords, you’re already behind.

What’s Actually Changing

AI-powered search results—whether it’s Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT’s web search, or Perplexity—work differently from traditional search. They don’t just match keywords. They synthesize information, generate answers, and cite sources. Users are increasingly getting their answers directly on the search results page, without clicking through to a website at all.

This means two things:

First, zero-click searches are becoming the norm for informational queries. If someone asks “What is the difference between shared hosting and VPS hosting?”, AI search will answer them. They won’t visit your blog post about it—unless your content offers something the AI can’t synthesize: original research, personal experience, proprietary data, or a unique perspective.

Second, authority signals matter more than ever. AI models are trained to prioritize sources that demonstrate genuine expertise. E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness) isn’t just a Google guideline anymore—it’s the foundation of how AI systems decide what to cite.

What You Should Actually Do

Stop chasing keywords. Start building topical authority. That means creating comprehensive, interconnected content around your core expertise. One deep, authoritative pillar page will outperform ten shallow blog posts every single time.

Optimize for being cited, not just ranked. Structure your content with clear headings, direct answers, and cited sources. When an AI model scans your page, it should immediately understand what question you’re answering and why your answer is credible.

Double down on what AI can’t replicate. Your personal experience. Your case studies. Your original opinions. I’ve been doing this for 25 years—no AI can replicate the insights I’ve gained from actually building and maintaining websites for real clients.
